[a. Gr. ποῦ στῶ ‘where I may stand’; from the saying attributed to Archimedes (in Pappus 8. 11., ed. Hultsch 1060), δός µοι ποῦ στῶ, καὶ κινῶ τὴν γῆν ‘give me (a place) where I may stand, and I will move the earth’. (Usually written in Greek.)]
A place to stand on, a standing-place; fig. a basis of operation.
