Name in S. Africa for a large ferry-boat attached to an iron or steel cable.
1775Masson Journ. to Cape in Phil. Trans. LXVI. 279 We came to the pont or ferry. 1899Daily News 11 Dec. 5/3 The Boers have seized the pont on the Orange River at Prieska, and cut the wire cable attached to it. 1900Ibid. 13 Jan. 5/2 Pont is the name given in South Africa to the ferry boats plying on the large and more rapid rivers, and worked by steel cables.
