[ad. mod.L. name of subfamily Ponerinæ, f. generic name Ponera (P. A. Latreille 1804, in Nouveau Dict. Hist. Nat. XXIV. 179), f. Gr. πονηρά, fem. of πονηρός wicked + -ine1.]
A. adj. Of, or pertaining to, or designating ants of the subfamily Ponerinæ, which includes mainly tropical species.
B. n. A ponerine ant.
