[Echoic. So LG. pluf, Du. plof interj.; LG. pluffen, Du. ploffen, WFris. ploffien to puff, explode.]
1. A strong puff or explosive emission of air, gas or smoke (as in the firing of gunpowder), or of dust; hence, colloq. a shot of a musket or fowling-piece.
