plough-gate, plow- north. Eng. and Sc. Now only Hist.|ˈplaʊgeɪt|
[f. as prec. + gate n.2; cf. ox-gate.]
Originally, perhaps the same as plough-land (and hence commonly used by Scottish antiquarian writers to render carrucata); but in later times apparently applied to a much smaller quantity of land.
Jamieson says: ‘A plough-gate or plough-gang of land is now [1825] understood to include about forty Scots acres [= 505/6 Imperial acres] at an average. Fife.’
