A plant or microbial cell organelle formed by invagination of the plasma membrane and composed of tissue derived from it.
1962M. R. Edwards in Abstr. 8th Internat. Congr. Microbiol. 31/1 The ingrowths of the plasmalemma may branch repeatedly and anastomose to give rise to a complicated honeycomb-like organelle. This organelle may be termed a plasmalemmosome in view of its origin from the plasmalemma.1968Ann. Bot. XXXII. 468 In higher plants, at least some of the plasmalemmasomes appear to have granular or fibrillar contents within well⁓defined vesicles.1973Protoplasma LXXVI. 235 The morphology of plasmalemmasomes in the species examined is variable and ranges from vesicles or tubules within the plasmalemma invagination to parallel arrays of membrane lamellae. Plasmalemmasomes thus appear to be primarily excess plasma membrane that has accumulated, perforce, endocellularly.
