[a. G. pinakon (G. Städeler 1859, in Ann. d. Chem. u. Pharm. CXI. 279), f. Gr. πίναξ tablet + -one.]
A white crystalline substance (C₆H₁₄O₂), crystallizing in large tablets, produced by the action of sodium or sodium-amalgam on aqueous acetone. Also, any other alcohol having two hydroxyl groups which are bonded to adjacent tertiary carbon atoms. Now usu. called pinacol.
