[Fr., = black foot.]
A name given to people of French origin living in Algeria during French rule, and to those who returned to Europe after the granting of independence to Algeria in 1962.
The name was applied formerly to Algerian stokers who worked bare-footed on French cargo-boats, and by extension, to Algerians generally.
