In picric acid, also called trinitrocarbolic or carbazotic acid, artificial indigo-bitter, a yellow intensely bitter substance (C₆H₃N₃O₇ = C₆H₃(NO₂)₃O), crystallizing in yellow shining prisms or laminæ, first observed by Hausmann in 1788, used in dyeing and more recently in the manufacture of explosives.
