[mod.L. (C. Bauhin Πιναξ Theatri Botanici (1623) 398, adopted by Linnæus in Systema Naturæ (1735) as a generic name), f. Gr. ϕιλάδελϕος loving one's brother, used as a plant name.]
A shrub of the genus so called, belonging to the family Saxifragaceæ, native to southern Europe, North America, or Asia, and generally bearing white or cream flowers, often fragrant; also called mock orange or syringa.
