[ad. F. phœnicoptère (Rabelais) or ad. L. phœnīcopterus (Plin.), a. Gr. ϕοινικόπτερος flamingo, lit. red-feathered, f. ϕοῖνιξ, ϕοινικ- crimson + πτέρον feather, wing.]
Adapted form of the Greek and Latin name of the flamingo of Southern Europe (Phœnicopterus roseus or antiquorum).
