[f. L. Pherecratīus, a. Gr. ϕερεκράτειος (f. ϕερεκράτης name of a Greek poet) + -an.]
Name of a logaœdic metre or verse consisting of three feet, normally a spondee, dactyl, and spondee (or trochee), but admitting of some variations. Also called Pherecratian |-ˈkreɪʃ(ɪ)ən|, Pherecratic |-ˈkrætɪk|.
1788Lemprière Classical Dict. (1826) 511/1 He [Pherecrates] invented a sort of verse, which from him has been called Pherecratian.1797Encycl. Brit.
