phenformin Pharm.|fɛnˈfɔːmɪn| [f. phen- + formaldehyde + imino-), constituent parts of the alternative name phenethylformamidinyliminourea.] A white crystalline solid, 1-phenethylbiguanide hydrochloride, C10H15N5.HCl, which is used in the oral treatment of diabetes. Also phenformin hydrochloride.

C. Gerald Pharmacol. xxv. 441 It appears that phenformin may act by accelerating the intracellular oxidation of glucose, a process which is depressed in the absence of insulin. Phenformin is used alone for the treatment of maturity-onset diabetes and in combination with insulin in juvenile diabetes. 1977Lancet 22 Jan. 191/2 Metformin is replacing phenformin as the biguanide of choice in the treatment of obese maturity-onset diabetics because of the association between phenformin therapy and lacticacidosis. |
