[ad. mod.L. generic name Pentastoma (C. A. Rudolphi Entozoorum Synopsis Mantissa (1819) 123) or Pentastomum (F. C. H. Creplin Novæ Observationes de Entozois (1829) 76), f. penta- + Gr. -στοµος adj. formative f. στόµα mouth; so called from the appearance of the mouth and the two pairs of chitinoid hooks adjacent to it. (So in mod.F.)]
An animal of the genus Pentastomum or Pentastoma, comprising internal parasites infesting man and other animals; formerly classed as trematode worms.
1857tr. Kuchenmeister's Parasites Hum. Body (Syd. Soc.) II. 7 People took these four feet for the same number of oral orifices, so that counting in the true mouth, five such openings were obtained and the animal received the name of Pentastomum. 1872Aitken Sc. & Pract. Med. (ed. 6) I. 196 Pruner..pointed out, in 1847, the existence of the pentastoma as a parasite in the human subject. 1878Bell Gegenbaur's Comp. Anat. 298 This is most marked in Pentastomum, when the ovary is attached to a circular canal. 1890Century Dict., Pentastome. 1937Craig & Faust Clin. Parasitol. iii. xxxi. 511 (heading) ‘Tongue worms’, Pentastomes (Linguatulida). 1956T. W. M. Cameron Parasites 149 Pentastomes or ‘tongue-worms’ were until recently regarded as aberrant arachnids.
