A name given (chiefly by its critics) to a way of describing religions (esp. those of the ancient Near East) not on the basis of historical development but on the basis of common and recurrent patterns; also, a mode of literary appreciation based on recurrent patterns. Hence ˈpatternist, a proponent of this theory (also attrib. or as adj.).
