Pasionaria, n.|pasjoˈnɑːrjə| Also Pasionara. [Sp., lit. ‘passion-flower’.] The nickname of the inspirational Basque Communist leader Dolores (La Pasionaria) Ibárruri Gómez (1895–1989), renowned for her emotional oratory and colourful personality, used allusively for a popular leader or figurehead, esp. one who is persecuted for supporting a political or other cause.
