[mod.L. (R. Broom 1938, in Nature 27 Aug. 379/1), f. para-1 + Gr. ἄνθρωπος man.]
A fossil hominid first described from remains found at Kromdraai and other sites in southern Africa, formerly included in the genus so called, and now usually included in the species Australopithecus robustus.
1941R. Broom in Nature 5 July 13/1 We have a good lower jaw of Paranthropus. Its teeth are almost typically human. 1946Transvaal Mus. Mem. II. iii. 85 In the male Plesianthropus the anterior surface of the maxilla is essentially similar to that in the female, and thus unlike that in the presumably male Paranthropus.
