[a. F. paraclet (13th c. in Hatz.-Darm.), ad. eccl. L. paraclētus (also paraclītus) Tertull., etc., a. Gr. παράκλητος advocate, intercessor, one called to one's aid, f. παρακαλεῖν to call in, call to one's aid. Although a passive verbal = L. ad-vocātus, παράκλητος was at an early date associated by the Greek Fathers with the Hellenistic sense of παρακαλεῖν to console, comfort, and the active agent-n. παρακλήτωρ encourager, comforter. Cf. the active sense acquired by advocate.
In Job xvi. 2, where the LXX has παρακλήτορες κακῶν πάντες, Aquila and Theodotion have παράκλητοι.]
1. A title of the Holy Spirit (repr. Gr. παράκλητος in John xiv. 16, 26, xv. 26, xvi. 7); properly ‘an advocate, one called in to one's assistance, an intercessor’, but often taken as = ‘comforter’ (see comforter 1 b). Also (rarely) repr. Gr. παράκλητος ‘advocate’ as applied to Christ (1 John ii. 1).
