[app. related in its radical part to OF. pann-, pan-, penart, penard ‘cutlass, a kind of large two-edged knife, poniard’ (Godef.), med.L. penardus (Du Cange), but the suffix is different. Cf. also med.L. pennatus a kind of sword (Du Cange), It. pennato ‘a kind of cutting-hooke that gardiners vse’ (Florio); also (for the radical part) L. bipennis a two-edged axe.]
