[Origin unknown.
According to quot. 1619 (supported by 1503, 1532) the name of a fur-bearing animal. For sense 2, connexion has been suggested with Pampellone, a town of France near Alby, and Pampeluna in Spain: cf. OF. pampelune ‘étoffe fabriquée à Pampelune’ (Godef.).]
