palæontology|ˌpæliːɒnˈtɒlədʒɪ, ˌpeɪliː-| Also (chiefly U.S.) paleo-. [f. palæo-, paleo- + Gr. ὄντα, pl. of ὤν being + -λογία, -logy.] The study of extinct organized beings; that department of geology or of biology which treats of fossil animals and plants; often confined to that of extinct animals (palæozoology).
