[f. mod.L. name of suborder Palæoniscoidei, f. generic name Palæoniscus (L. Agassiz Recherches sur les Poissons fossiles (1833) II. v. 41), f. palæo- + Gr. ὀνίσκος a sea-fish resembling cod + -oid.]
A. n. A fossil fish belonging to the suborder Palæoniscoidei, a group that includes elongate fishes with heterocercal tails and diamond-shaped scales.
B. adj. Of or pertaining to a fish of this kind.
