Here, and at Cebu, he describes a sexual practice known as palang. ‘The males, large and small, have their penis pierced from one side to the other near the head, with a gold or tin bolt as large as a goose quill. In each end of the bolt some have what resembles a star, with points; others are like the head of a cast nail... In the middle of the bolt is a hole, through which they urinate’. Ibid. 435 Although certain writers..have either omitted this story or called it one of Pigafetta's tall tales, palang did exist. It persists to this day in Borneo and parts of the Philippines. |
