† oxyˈsulphate Chem.
An obs. name for a metallic sulphate containing a larger proportion of oxygen, as oxysulphate of iron = ferric sulphate.
1802Med. Jrnl. VIII. 550 It has been proposed to distinguish them [iron sulphates] by terming that salt which contains the metal more highly oxydated, an oxysulphat. 1815Henry Elem. Chem. (ed. 7) II. 109 This salt has been called, but not with strict propriety, oxy-sulphate. Its legitimate name would be sulphate of peroxide of iron; but, as this is inconvenient from its length, it may be called the red sulphate of iron.
So oxyˈsulphide, a compound of an element or positive compound radical with oxygen and sulphur; generally restricted to compounds of the oxide and sulphide of a metal. † oxyˈsulphion Obs. ‘Daniell's term for the acid compound of an oxy-salt containing sulphur which is set free at the positive pole of a galvanic battery, but which cannot exist in a free condition’ (Syd.
