A semisynthetic penicillin, C19H18N3O5NaS.H2O, that is used as an alternative to methicillin, having the same resistance to penicillinase and being in addition resistant to acid so that it can be taken orally; (5-methyl-3-phenyl-4-isoxazolyl)-penicillin sodium. Also called oxacillin sodium and sodium oxacillin (in the British and U.S. pharmacopœias respectively).
