‖ onoˈmasticon
[a. Gr. ὀνοµαστικόν (sc. βιβλίον) book of names, vocabulary: see onomastic.]
A vocabulary or alphabetic list of proper names, esp. of persons. Formerly used more widely of a vocabulary of names or nouns, or even of a general lexicon.
Often used as a title of works of this nature, e.g. that of Jul. Pollux (180–238) which was a vocabulary arranged according to subjects and not alphabetically: cf. the Lat.-Eng. Nominale, and similar works of the 15th c., reprinted by Wright-Wülcker.
