odontome Path.|əʊˈdɒntəʊm| Also in mod.L. odonˈtoma. [f. Gr. type *ὀδοντῶµα tooth-formation, f. ὀδοντ- tooth; in mod.F. odontome (Littré).] A small tumour or growth composed of dentine; more generally, any hard outgrowth from a tooth.
1870tr. Stricker's Hum. Histol. xv. 470 We find in the dentine of the teeth, especially in pathological conditions, masses with bone lacunæ, termed Odontomes by Virchow. 1878T. Bryant Pract. Surg. I. 559 Tumours which result from the abnormal and excessive development of the dental structures at any time during the tooth's formation have been grouped together by M. Broca under the name of Odontomes. 1892Syd. Soc. Lex., Coronary odontoma, Broca's term for an odontoma which arises during the formation of the crown of a tooth. |
