[receptive a.], (of a stimulus) painful; responding to or caused by such a stimulus; hence nociˈceptor [receptor], any sensory receptor for painful stimuli; nociˈfensor a. [L. dē-fens-, ppl. stem (in defensive a., etc.): cf. L. dēfensor defender] (of a nerve) concerned in the transmission of the sensation of pain.
