[f. late L. monopter-os (Vitruvius, in sense 1 below), mod.L. monopter-us (in sense 2), a. Gr. *µονόπτερος, lit. ‘having one wing or fin’, f. µόνο-ς mono- + πτερ-όν wing, fin, row or circle of columns: see -al1.]
