An astringent substance obtained from the bark of a Brazilian tree, Chrysophyllum Buranhem (C. glycyphlœum). Hence monesin |mɒˈniːsɪn| Chem., an acrid principle obtained from monesia.
1843Pharm. Jrnl. III. 292 Dr. G. Martin St. Ange..says: ‘A vegetable substance, called monesia, has lately been imported from South America, in the form of hard thick cakes... M. Bernard Derosne, the druggist, who introduced it, informs me that some travellers call the monesia bark, goharem; and others, buranhem’.1858Hogg Veg. Kingd. 500 An acid [read acrid] principle, analogous to saponin, called monesin.
