[L. Mithrās, Mithrēs = Gr. Μίθρᾱς, a. OPers. Mithra, corresponding etymologically to Skr. Mitra, one of the gods of the Vedic pantheon.]
One of the chief gods of the ancient Persians, in later times often identified with the sun. His worship was introduced amongst the Romans under the empire, and spread over most of northern and western Europe. Also applied by More to the Supreme Being of ‘Utopia’.
