a. In the 17th c., a member of a body of Catalonian banditti who infested the Pyrenees.
b. Before and during the Peninsular war, a Spanish guerrilla soldier; also, a member of a corps of French irregulars raised by Napoleon in 1808 for service against the Spaniards.
c. In modern Spain, the designation of the soldiers of certain local regiments of infantry, chiefly employed on escort duties.
