The Gr. βίος is here, as in mod. scientific formations generally, used in an incorrect sense: see bio-. The sense of Gr. *µῑκροβιος would be ‘short lived’.] An extremely minute living being, whether plant or animal; chiefly applied to the bacteria concerned in causing diseases and fermentation.
