A flat or somewhat hollowed oblong stone, upon which grain, cocoa, etc. is ground by means of a smaller stone. Also metate-stone (Funk's Stand. Dict.).
1834in Southwestern Hist. Q. (1942) XLV. 330 Mrs. Roark had a Mexican utensil for grinding corn, called a metate.
