A variety of vine of the species Vitis vinifera yielding black grapes used in wine-making; the grape of this variety, widely grown throughout France, esp. around Bordeaux, in California, and in other temperate regions. Also, the soft-textured, distinctively fruit-flavoured red wine made from this grape.
