[Corrupted or cognate form of Narragansett Indian munnawhatteaûg, ‘a fish somewhat like a herring’ (R. Williams Key Lang. America, 1643).
The fish was used by the Indians for manure, and the name seems to be connected with the vb. munnohquohteau, (Eliot's Indian Bible) ‘he enriches the land, fertilizes’.]
A fish of the herring family, Brevoortia tyrannus, common on the east coasts of the United States; it is much used for manure and produces a valuable oil.
