[mod.L., f. the name of Henry John Mandeville (1773–1861), British minister: see quot. 1840.]
A tropical American genus of plants (mostly lianas) of the family Apocynaceae, some of which are grown as ornamentals in tropical and subtropical regions and including the Chilean jasmine; (also mandevilla) a plant of this genus; esp. the cultivar M. ×amabilis, with red flowers having a strong fragrance.
