[f. mod.L. name of former class Linguatulida, f. the generic name Linguatula (G. F. von Froelich 1789, in Naturforscher XXIV. 148), f. L. linguātus ‘having a tongue’, eloquent.]
A parasitic worm-like arthropod of the genus Linguatula, the adult form of which attacks the nasal passages of certain carnivorous mammals, esp. canids; also, a member of the group Pentastomida, including parasitic arthropods, most of which attack snakes; = tongue-worm (b) s.v. tongue n. 16. Also as adj.
