The name of Franz von Leydig (1821–1908), German anatomist, used attrib., in the possessive, and with of- adjunct to designate various anatomical structures described by or associated with him, esp. the interstitial cell of the testis, a large, polyhedral cell occurring in large numbers in the connective tissue around the seminiferous tubules and believed to be the site of androgen production in the testis.
