The names of J. P. Lee (1831–1904), Amer. designer of the bolt action, and Enfield, a town in Greater London, site of the British Royal Small Arms Factory, designers of the rifling form, used to designate a type of rifle used by the British Army in the S. African War and, modified, in the wars of 1914–18 and 1939–45. Also Lee-Enfield bullet.
