A crystalline dye intermediate, 2-amino-5-naphthol-7-sulphonic acid, C10H9NO4S, used in coupling reactions with diazotized amines to form direct azo dyes.
1914F. W. Atack tr. A. Wahl's Manuf. Org. Dyestuffs vii. 66 The third [sc. compound] is obtained by alkaline fusion of 2-naphthylamine-5:7-disulphonic acid, and is called ‘J acid’.1917Fort & Lloyd Chem. Dyestuffs xvi. 159 There are certain peculiarities about J-acid and its azo derivatives. Thus coupled with diazobenzene derivatives cotton-dyeing properties are absent, but with diazonaphthalene derivatives are strongly marked.1937Chem. Abstr. XXXI. 3281 Absorption by cotton cellulose of J acid..was studied.1971R. L. M. Allen Colour Chem. v. 57 About 35 monoazo direct dyes are in use, most of them containing either a thiazole or a J acid residue.
