[f. iod- + -ous: cf. F. iodeux.]
1. Chem. Applied to compounds containing iodine in greater proportion to oxygen than those called iodic; e.g. a hypothetical iodous acid, HIO₂.
Compounds with a still greater proportion of iodine are termed hypo-iodous, as a supposed hypo-iodous acid, HIO (Watts Dict. Chem. 1882, III. 297).
