[This and the following words are 16th c. formations on Gr. ὕδωρ, ὑδρο- water, on the pattern of the corresponding geographer, -graphic, -graphical, -graphy, which came down through L. from actual Gr. formations. The immediate precursors of the English words were the Fr. hydrographe (1548), hydrographique, -graphie (1551).]
One skilled or practised in hydrography; spec. one whose business it is to make hydrographic surveys and to construct charts of the sea, its currents, etc., as the Hydrographer to the Admiralty.
The first Hydrographer to the Navy was appointed in 1795.
