A spiny shark, Oxynotus centrina, of the family Oxynotidæ, found in the Mediterranean Sea and off the coast of Portugal.
Gamillscheg's suggestion that it is perhaps f. Fr. humer ‘to inhale’ arbitrarily modelled on Fr. lamantin lamantin is chronologically inconclusive. The word is also sometimes identified with L. humus ‘humus, soil’, from the habit that the humantin has of lying in the mud on the sea-bed, but the connection remains uncertain.
