[The form remained unsettled until the early 20th c.; it appears first in Sc. and north. Eng. writers and vocabularies.
It is app. the interj. halloo, hullo, hilloa, with riming reduplication, thus, halloo-baloo! The conjecture has been made, but without any evidence, that it was orig. a wolf-hunting cry, and contained the French words bas le loup! (Cf. balow, baloo.)]
