1) 作为名词，home 本来更多表示“家园”、“温暖的家”（着重一家人的人际关系），如 Home, sweet home。家庭居住的房子，本应是 house。但是在流行的美国英语中，区区作为物质的“家庭住房”，通常也不叫 house 而叫 home，如：homeowner 是自己有房子居住的人。“买房”是 buy a home。“下跌的住房价格”是 falling home values。

2) 作为副词，主要表示动态的“回家”。

• It's time to go home now.现在该是回家的时候了。
• He's bringing her home.他正在带她回家。
• She was on her way home.她正在回家途中。
• I had to send home for some dry clothes.我不得不托人回家替我拿些干衣服来。
• I haven't written home yet.我还没有写信回家。
• Tom walked home after school.汤姆放学后步行回家。
• It would be wonderful to have you home again.如果你能再回家来，那真是太好了。
• When his leg was mended he took coach to Weymouth, there, or so it was generally supposed, to find a passage home. (John Fowles, The French Lieutenant's Woman, Chapter 6)他的腿伤好了以后，大家都说他乘车到了韦茅斯，只是在那儿顺便小住几天，想搭船回国（注意不要把 passage home 误解为两个名词，前面 passage 误解为 home 的定语）。

甚至在 see somebody home（送某人回家）中，see 本来的动态意义不强，但是 home 的动态意义起了弥补作用。如果要表示静态的“在家”，通常用 at home。

• I'll be at home after six.过了六点我在家。
• If anybody calls, I'm not at home.有谁打电话来，就说我不在家。

但也有单用 home 表示静态的（英语本来就有用静态形式表示动态结果的习惯）。

• Here we are, home at last.咱们终于回到家了。
• I'll be home after six.过了六点我在家。
• He stayed home last night.他昨夜留在家里。
