An oxide of barium and manganese occurring as brittle silvery grey to black crystals having a metallic lustre.

Holland, F.R.S., Director of the Geological Survey of India, and President of this Institute. 1943Amer. Mineralogist XXVIII. 505 Cryptomelane, hollandite, and coronadite are isostructural and form isomorphous mixtures to some extent. 1952Nature 6 Dec. 974/1 The formula of hollandite, deduced from that of the psilomelane used in this investigation, is Ba1·01(Mn,R)8O16, in good agreement with that previously proposed by Byström and Byström, Ba(2 -x)Mn8O16, where x is approximately equal to one. It has been suggested that discrete water molecules may be present in hollandite as occupants of vacant sites of otherwise perfect sub-rows. |
