Tremor of the iris; esp. a rhythmic contraction and dilatation of the pupil independent of the light intensity; also, a complaint of the eyes, such that they are always winking.
1684Blancard Physical Dict. 150 Hippus is an Affection of the Eyes, wherein they continually shake and tremble, and now and then twinkle. 1838H. Houston in S. Littell Dis. Eye 177 Oscillation of the iris is applied to the alternate contraction and expansion (hippus iridis), as well as to the trembling of the iris. 1904L. W. Fox Dis.
