[mod.L., f. Gr. ἑτερο- hetero- + πτερόν wing.]
A suborder of Hemiptera, comprising those insects whose wings consist of dissimilar parts, being coriaceous at the base and membranous at the tip; the true bugs. Opp. to Homoptera.
1826Kirby & Sp. Entomol. xlvii. (1828) IV. 385 He denominated the first of the sections Heteroptera.1874Lubbock Orig. & Met. Ins. i. 25 The Heteroptera cannot exactly be said either to sting or bite.
Hence heteˈropteran = heteropter; heteˈropterous a., belonging to or having the characters of the Heteroptera.
