[f. mod.L. helvola yellowish, the name of the mutant variety of fungus, characterized by its buff colour, from which the acid was first isolated: see -ic.]
helvolic acid, an antibiotic with the probable formula C32H42O8 produced by some strains of the fungus Aspergillus fumigatus. Also called fumigacin.
1943E. Chain et al. in Brit. Jrnl. Exper. Path. XXIV. 119 A new antibiotic has been isolated in the crystalline state from culture filtrates of Aspergillus fumigatus, mut. helvola Yuill. It has been named helvolic acid. 1944Jrnl. Bacteriol. XLVII. 392 Helvolic acid is apparently identical with the fumigacin from which the gliotoxin fraction has been removed. 1949H. W. Florey et al. Antibiotics i. 66 Helvolic acid..had some protective action against streptococcal infection in mice, but its other properties made it unsuitable for use in man. 1953J. Ramsbottom Mushrooms & Toadstools xxiii. 289 Fumigacin (helvolic acid) produced by Aspergillus fumigatus has all the necessary qualities except that bacteria readily acquire resistance to it. 1965P.
